CRESCENT CITY, Calif. — Redwood National and State Park rangers and California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens are seeking the public’s assistance in investigating the recent poaching of four elk near Williams Ridge along Bald Hills Road. Officials were alerted to the incident on July 21 and discovered that the elk had been shot with lead ammunition, with no meat taken.

The area, located within Redwood National Park, prohibits hunting under federal and state law. The use of lead shot poses a significant threat to wildlife, particularly to California condors, which were reintroduced to the region two years ago by the Yurok Tribe in partnership with several agencies.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the park at 707-465-7751 or remain anonymous by calling the CDFW’s CalTip line at 1-888-334-CalTIP (888-334-2258) or the park’s anonymous crime tip line at 707-765-7353.
