In response to the recent mass layoffs within the National Park Service (NPS), a series of nationwide protests are scheduled for March 1, 2025, at various national parks across the country. These demonstrations aim to voice opposition to the termination of approximately 1,000 probationary NPS employees, a decision made by the Department of the Interior on February 14 as part of a broader federal workforce reduction.

The Resistance Rangers, a coalition of over 650 NPS workers opposing the current administration’s policies, have called for rallies at all 433 national parks.
These layoffs have already led to significant operational challenges. For instance, visitors to Big Bend National Park in Texas experienced unprecedented delays over President’s Day weekend, with vehicle lines stretching over a mile due to reduced staffing.
As the busy spring and summer seasons approach, concerns are mounting regarding the ability of national parks to operate effectively amidst reduced staffing. The upcoming March 1 protests reflect a growing movement advocating for the restoration of these critical positions to ensure the preservation and safety of America’s cherished natural spaces.
