A large snowstorm swept through the southwestern United States just before the weekend hit. At Bryce Canyon National Park, that meant closing down the southern portion of the park until the roads could be safely cleared.

The park announced on its social media page on Saturday that the road was officially reopened, but urged visitors going to the southern end of the park to “be aware that there may be snowy or icy patches along the road. Follow the posted speed limit and stay safe!”

Other southwestern parks also got blanketed in snow late last week, including the Grand Canyon, Yosemite and Sequoia & Kings Canyon.

While it can be hard to imagine during the heat of the summer that these parks ever get snow, their high elevations mean they are also susceptible to winter weather.

Pay attention to weather forecasts as you plan your early spring travels. Even if it looks warm and sunny out the window, there may still be winter road conditions in the parks.
