After a long winter of hibernation, the first grizzly bear of the year has been spotted at Brooks Camp in Katmai National Park, according to a recent Instagram post.

The park supports one of the highest densities of grizzly bears, with about 2,200 grizzlies inhabiting the area. Brooks Camp is one of the most popular destinations to view grizzly bears. Hundreds of bears congregate at the Brooks River for the annual salmon run each year.

Seeing bears at Brooks Camp in early spring isn’t very common, but in late June, bears begin to arrive in force to feast on salmon. The best time to view bears at the camp is July through September.

Katmai Bear Cams

Katmai National Park hosts the popular Bear Cams run by Explore.org. Many of the live cameras are currently off but they’ll turn back on in the coming months as more bears return to the area.

In the meantime, you can watch the 2024 season highlights from the Explore.org Bear Cams.
