Visitors and residents around Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park are experiencing smoky skies and poor air quality as two major wildfires burn in southern Utah—the Forsyth Canyon Fire to the west and the France Canyon Fire to the east.

The smoke has led to reduced visibility and health warnings for those engaging in strenuous outdoor activity, including hiking. Public health officials are urging people to limit exposure, especially vulnerable individuals, and consult AirNow.gov for real-time air quality updates.

As of Monday morning, the Forsyth Canyon Fire has grown to 7,045 acres. Sunday, fire crews used a break in windy weather to fly over the blaze and map the fire perimeter using infrared technology. Officials say the updated mapping will help them more effectively plan operations and share accurate information with the public.

To the east, the France Canyon Fire has grown to 15,755 acres and is 10 percent contained.

Fire claims 14 structures in Pine Valley Community

The Pine Valley community remains under mandatory evacuation as firefighters continue efforts to protect homes and minimize threats. As of June 21, the fire had burned 1,640 acres with 0% containment. Fire crews have been battling intense red flag conditions, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph on exposed slopes.

According to Washington County Emergency Management, 14 structures have been lost since the Forsyth Fire advanced into the valley on Thursday, June 19. That night, firefighters worked to hold the fire using a fuel break, but winds and steep terrain made conditions extremely difficult.

About 450 residents have been impacted. Firefighting efforts include Hotshot crews, water tenders, air tankers, and a Type 1 helicopter. A Complex Incident Management Team is expected to take over operations in the coming days.

Extreme fire behavior and gusty erratic winds have pushed the fire east and north of Pine Valley, claiming 14 structures and leading to mandatory evacuations. (Utah Fire Info.)

Public Safety Reminders

Officials are reminding the public to:

  • Stay out of closed areas, including Pine Valley.
  • Limit outdoor activity in smoky conditions.
  • Follow updates from Utah Fire Info and local emergency management.

The cause of both fires is under investigation. Officials continue to prioritize firefighter and public safety as suppression efforts continue.
