A video showing a man approaching a wolf pack at Yellowstone National Park is garnering thousands of views. The video was taken by wildlife photographer Keith Allen Kerbs, who was in the park that day.
“So far have seen quite a bit which I’ll share soon but had to share this video I took this morning from a safe distance of a very foolish man and a pack of wolves,” Kerbs wrote in a post on Instagram. “He almost didn’t make it out alive.”
The video shows the man alternatively walking toward and backing away from a pack of at least five wolves. Onlookers shouting at the man to come back to a safe distance can be heard in the background audio. At one point, it seems that the man sprayed some bear spray or another aerosol substance between him and the pack.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a spokesperson for the National Park Service (NPS) confirmed that the incident “was reported to National Park Rangers at Yellowstone,” and that the man “was found and cited.”
The incident is currently under investigation, the NPS spokesperson said.
The Yellowstone website states that a 100-yard (300-foot) “minimum distance is required to watch wolves, but park staff often manage viewing opportunities at even greater distances to maintain safety.”
